Reconciliation in 4B

Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. From May 27 to June 3, we come together to reflect on our relationships as a nation and to promote understanding and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians.

In the spirit of Reconciliation Week, the students of 4B have embarked on two meaningful projects: creating a mural and a leaf wreath. These projects aim to honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and symbolise our commitment to reconciliation.

Our mural project began with a lesson on the importance of art in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Students learned how storytelling through art has been a vital way for these communities to pass down knowledge, culture, and history for generations.

Each student contributed a unique element to the mural, reflecting their personal interpretation of reconciliation. Our accelerated learners took on leadership roles, helping their peers with more complex techniques and ensuring the overall design was cohesive.

The leaf wreath project allowed students to connect with nature, a central aspect of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. We discussed the significance of plants and the environment in Indigenous traditions and how they symbolise growth, healing, and connection to the land.

Students carefully arranged the leaves into a wreath shape, symbolising the circle of life and the importance of nurturing our environment.

Students decorated their leaves with messages of reconciliation, respect, and hope for the future. They then assembled their individual leaves into one large wreath, showcasing the diversity and unity of our class.

Through these creative projects, 4B has embraced the values of Reconciliation Week, learning about and respecting the rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The mural and leaf wreath will be displayed in our school, serving as a lasting reminder of our commitment to unity and understanding. We invite all families and community members to view these beautiful works of art and join us in celebrating Reconciliation Week 2024.
